Naturopathic Doctors

"What is a naturopathic doctor?

Naturopathic Doctors treat their patients- not just their conditions.  By  focusing on the cause of the illness, rather than only treating the symptoms, naturopaths work to establish a treatment plan  that restores balance and well being.
Naturopathic training
Naturopathic doctors train similiar to MDs and DOs.  They attend a four year undergraduate program before applying to an accredited naturopathic medical school.  The doctorate program is a rigorous 4-5 years of study.
During the program, the student takes classes in basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, pharmacology, biochemistry, immunology, histology, microbiology and pathology. The student also takes several naturopathic classes including nutrition, botanicals, manipulations, hydrotherapy, homeopathy. Additional training can be obtained in naturopathic obstetrics.
The student enters clinic in their second year. By the time they graduate, this student  treats close to 1000 patients under the supervision of licensed naturopathic doctors." -Jennifer Ash

"Susan begins treatment with a thorough intake interview about all aspects of your health condition.  Your practitioner will then feel your pulse and look at your tongue.

If receiving acupuncture: appropriate acupuncture points will be chosen to treat your condition.  Common point locations are generally bellow the elbows and knees or on the back.  The points are then swabbed with alcohol.  You will relax on a massage table while the needles are inserted and retained for about 30 minutes.  The total appointment time is about one hour.

If receiving herbal consultation: a customized formula will be written and prepared for you.  Herbal consultations generally take a total of 30 minutes.

If receiving medical qi gong: treatments vary, but often include gentle bodywork, energy therapy, and/or qi gong exercise instruction tailored for your condition.  Sessions last one hour.

How to Prepare:

  • Wear loose comfotable clothing
  • Eat something the day of your visit
  • Do not brush your tongue, eat or drink highly colored foods (cherry candy, orange soda, etc.) the day of your appointment
  • In consideration of chemically sensitive patients, please do not wear perfume, cologne, or heavily scented personal care items
  • Bring a list of all medications you are currently taking."

Gianna owns and manages community acupuncture, which is different from regular acupuncture:
"Our Mission: To make acupuncture affordable and accessible to more people so that they can improve the quality of their health and the quality of their lives. In doing this we seek to reflect the values of humility, simplicity, compassionate care, and concern for the common good.

We are here because we love acupuncture, and we know how much it can help change people's lives. We've seen firsthand that when you can make acupuncture part of your life, it can help with your chronic pain, and your allergies, and your hormones, your digestion, your blood pressure, and your grief, your low energy and your stress, with losing weight and maintaining a fitness program-- and with that nagging feeling that your health is just not as good as it could be.

Ultimately we want acupuncture to help lead folks back to their center, their strengths, their vitality, to the things they need and love to do, so that they can live their lives to their greatest potential-- because there's nothing better than that!!"

Integrative Medicine

"Integrative medicine is healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind, and spirit), including all aspects of lifestyle. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative.

The principles of integrative medicine:
  • A partnership between patient and practitioner in the healing process
  • Appropriate use of conventional and alternative methods to facilitate the body’s innate healing response
  • Consideration of all factors that influence health, wellness and disease, including mind, spirit and community as well as body
  • A philosophy that neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies uncritically
  • Recognition that good medicine should be based in good science, be inquiry driven, and be open to new paradigms
  • Use of natural, effective, less-invasive interventions whenever possible
  • Use of the broader concepts of promotion of health and the prevention of illness as well as the treatment of disease
  • Training of practitioners to be models of health and healing, committed to the process of self-exploration and self-development"
